JOHNSTON, Iowa (May 6th ) --- Kites on the Green is coming back! The 2017 kite festival will have even longer hours and more opportunities for family-friendly fun. Join us on Saturday, May 2 from 10 am to 8 pm in Johnston Commons, the grassy area near the Johnston Public Library. This free, public event will feature incredible show kite displays, kite contests for people of all ages and abilities, celebrity bol races, free kite building, sidewalk art, live music and delicious food.
Kites On The Green is the brainchild of Mayor Paula Dierenfeld who loved attending her hometown’s kite festival as a child. “One of my fondest childhood memories was seeing hundreds of colorful kites fly over the golf course in the small rural town in which I grew up. Kites On The Green is a wonderful opportunity for central Iowans to come together for a family-friendly festival as beautiful colors fill the Johnston sky,” Dierenfeld said.
A free kite-making workshop is planned for Saturday, April 25 from 2 to 4 pm. Come join us in the west meeting room of the Johnston Public Library, located at 6700 Merle Hay Road. Anyone who comes will receive a free kite-making kit, personal instruction and a chance to test out their new kite! Previous kite workshops have each drawn 80-100 people.
